RE: JANUARY & FEBRUARY

Florida Campgrounds, in the winter, want and seem to be able to get slave labor. We go to Florida in the winter, stay at a campground of our choosing and then find work in the area for which we are paid in real money. Cigar Mike

RE: First time snowbirds

It is my personal opinion that the cost of fuel will keep some folks from snowbirding this winter, especially those that only go south for a couple of months or less. I think most campgrounds will have space. Cigar Mike

RE: Easy Way to Improve Mileage

CSpenceFLY Your not flying an airplane, your driving a MH or truck. MPG is directly related to number of miles driven divided by amount of fuel consumed. 1000 miles driven at 10 MPG equals 100 gallons of fuel used. The same 1000 miles at 15 MPG equals 66.67 gallons. For the record we get 14 MPG pulling our 5th wheel at 58 MPH. At 70 we get 11 MPG. At 4.50 per gallon for diesel we save $75.00 in 1000 miles. That buys us an additional 16 gallons of fuel from the savings we get by slowing down. Cigar Mike

RE: Volunteer help needed

How about the $4.75 diesel or $4.20 gas to get there. Sounds like a long drive from anywhere. I think the 2 couples that opted out figured out travel costs. Seems like the state and federal parks are having trouble getting help this year. Just my .02 worth. Cigar Mike

RE: Easy Way to Improve Mileage

We have a Cummins 325 HP in our 2004.5 Dodge 2500 with a 4.10. In 3 years of fulltiming, 65,000 miles we learned that at 1700 RPM pulling our 11,000 5th wheel we get 14 MPG on the interstates in the east. We learned that at 70 we can not get 11 MPG. Incidentally, we have never felt threatened by people passing us. We use the right lane and if we get there later or tomorrow thats OK. Just our opinion, but at $4.50 diesel we save $75.00 per 1000 miles. Cigar Mike

RE: Pay For Hours Worked?

Travel at $4-5 per gallon gets real expensive pulling a tag or 5th wheel or driving a motorhome. I believe that those campgrounds that don't pay for all hours worked plus giving a site as part of the package will find it harder to get experienced workampers. Their loss. Cigar Mike

RE: Expected Campground Compensation?

Boblou, There are lots of campgrounds that do what they say. If this one did not, pack up and leave. You owe them nothing. 40 hours for a site is outrageous. We have been workamping for 4 years never heard of that. It seems like where you are at they are trying to get slave labor. Cigar Mike

RE: 12V Batteries for 5er???

We have been fulltiming for over 3 years and have dry camped for as much as 5 days straight. Our unit has 2-6v bateries and by not going crazy with power we have not had any problems. I do check the batteries once a month and top off with distilled water as necessary. Cigar Mike

RE: Expected Campground Compensation?

I think with the price of fuel getting workampers will be much harder for owners and the compensation package will improve. Many adds in Workamper requiring hours for the site being are repeated numerous times indicating a lack of interest. Cigar Mike

RE: Pay For Hours Worked?

Winter jobs, up until now have been scarce, so parks have had the upper hand. This year we will see how many people want to drive 1200-2500 miles at 5.00 per gallon for the right to work 15-30 hours a week for a site. Many parks had trouble getting staff for this summer, especially those charging workampers for the site. Cigar Mike

RE: first time workamper experience

Some owners and managers treat workampers like "trailer trash" and will fire a workamper, without notice, on a whim. They deserve like treatment, no notice. Just pack and leave. Read most Workampeer agreements, they owe you nothing and you owe them nothing. Cigar Mike

RE: Alltel and North American Phone Service

I can't tell you about Mexico or Canada but in the U.S. Alltel is great. I have been with them since 1995 and if an area has cell towers Alltel works. We have been in areas where other brands don't work but Alltel does. We are fulltime RVers and cover a lot of ground. I just hope that when Verizon takes over they don't screw Alltel up. Bigger isn't always better. Cigar Mike

RE: first time workamper experience

We have been workamping for 4 years and have on 2 occasions had similar problems. Employers let people go without warning or notice so I feel that no notice is required when you leave. By the way we never take a job unless the site is included and we are paid for all hours worked. Cigar Mike

RE: Full Timer RV Warranty Voided

We have been fulltiming in our Crossroads Cruiser for 3 years. The factory knew it and we never had a warranty issue that they did not cover. It came with a 2 year warranty and they even did cover 2 items in the 3rd year. Cigar Mike

RE: Fiesta Key KOA Avoid

We avoid KOAs, Tried them 3 times, both Company and private. We found that they treat workampers like trailer trash. Plenty of great campgrounds around to work at. It is not necessary to put up with their KOA C--P. Cigar Mike

RE: This seem normal for 13.5K A/C in 5er?

Another major factor in A/C operation is insulation in the unit. Lousy insulation will kill the effect of any A/C and most units have poor insulation. Cigar

RE: Crossroads cruiser

To the man who bought the Montana because the drawer sides were unfinished. I guess you don"t know much about wood. Our drawer sides are unfinished "Multi ply Birch Plywood which is quite expensive as compared to finished particleboard. No question that the multiply is much stronger and will last a lot longer. We have been fulltiming in our Cruiser for over 3 years and have been quite happy with the fit and finish. The drawers still work well. No knock on the Montana but I think that Crossroads gives the most bang for the buck and their service is tops. Cigar Mike

RE: Cruiser 5ver

We have been fulltiming in a 29CK for 3 years. Great unit and company support is probably the best in the industry. I've seen many much more expensive units have lots of problems. Ours have been minimal and Crossroads took care of them quickly. I would buy another Crossroads product in a heartbeat. Cigar Mike

RE: Positions Filing?

RVnRobin I understand what running a business is all about, having run my own business for 30 years, most of which time I between 80-85 employees. We had all of the problems you have, not for 3 months a year but year-round. A few small busiinesses make a ton of money, most hang on by their fingernails in any industry. The key to my success was taking care of my people. Some campgrounds make paying 4.50 a gallon for diesel to get to their assignment worthwhile. A substaintial number do not. All I am saying is that with the workampers increased cost of travel and general living expense the campgrounds that make it worthwhile will get the best employees. If people want to work several days a week for a site more power to them even though I have seen many adds in which after 20-25 hours for the site the workamper is paying in labor, say at 8.00 an hour, more than monthlys and seasonals. I respect your views even though I do not agree with them. Cigar Mike

RE: Positions Filing?

Campgrounds are not hurting. People still camp. They just stay closer to home. Instead of 2 week 3000 mile cross country trip folks go a short distance and spend their vacation at an RV park closer to home. It was that way last summer and I am sure it will be even more prevelent this year. Accusing someone of being irresponsible because you disagree with their position shows your lack of understanding about what goes on at many campgrounds concerning hours and work in exchange for a site.
